Our country's future, both economic and political is currently at an interesting juncture. If we are to survive in the turbulent waters of the international markets, especially now where securitisation is threatening not only the US housing finance market but also emerging markets where securitisation has been promoted, we need to ensure that our fundamentals are in place: a robust economy with appropriately regulated financial systems, a stable land tenure system and, above all, the rule of law. We need to show the world that our economy is stable enough to be attractive for investment, that our judicial system provides legal certainty and that the Rule of Law applies in practice, not just in theory. We have to be seen to respect human rights internationally. Our actions will reflect our values. Integrity, we either have it or we dont. There is no middle road, no grey area, no spin text. I believe we do, believe we can, but then we have to start thinking along intergation lines, and refrain fron from divisive thinking. We should acknowledge our differences but focus on our common humanity. We must connect the dots and strive towards national goals. Will 2010 achieve this noble ideal? You get what you measure: as long as we measure our differences, we will remain a nation which has overpromised and under-delivered: divided and fragmented.
